Newquay is central in Cornwall so makes for easy access to both the north and south coasts. You can go as near and as far as you wish whether it be rock fishing beach fishing rivergame or stillwater trout fishing, boat fishing or coarse fishing.
There are many places where good rock fishing can be found on the North Coast, with an abundance of different species for the keen angler. All are within 30 - 60 minutes of The Croft bed & breakfast hotel in Newquay. What about crab fihsing in and around the coast!
The best bait to use is sandeel ragworm lugworm peeler carb and makerel strip.
Good marks for ray and turbot areTrenance and Trevose where good quality pollock, mackerel, wrasse, garfish, plaice, dabs and conger can also be found. Park Head is well known for a wonderful variety including gurnard, ray, pollock and wrasse. Rumps Point to the east of Padstow for gunard, ray, pollock and wrasse. Daymer Bay and the wave cut platforms at Pentire are both good marks but require caution. Godrevy Point offers mackerel, polloock and wrasse, which also abound at Navax Point, Rumps Point at St Agnes for gunard, ray, plaice and dabs.
There are many places on the North coast where there is good rock fishing. Newquay headland, Fly cellars, Pentire headlandm Porth Island are all popular sites.
It should be noted that in the summer the beaches are very popular with bathers surfers and holioday makers so beach and tide tides should be chosen with some care.
Perranporth offers several miles of good beach for all flatfish as does Holywell Bay and Crantock. Watergate Bay is fine for ray, turbot and plaice as is Mawgan Port and Constantine. The Bude breakwater and Cackington Haven are good marks for codling, flat fish, mackerel, whiting and dogfish. Widemouth bay alkso offers good fishing. Crooklets, Maer and Northcott Mouth are good beaches fished at two hours before low water and on the incoming tide, mostly for skate and flatfish.
Beware of weed which is sometimes brought onto Portreath and St Agens. Chapel Porth is good for ray and turbot and other beaches providing plaice, dab and flounder. Perranport Beach is also popular with holidaymakers so avoid busy times; late evenings and early mornings will give excellent sport.
Newquay beaches are good for fishing Bass in the evenings. A good beach for flatfish is Crantock. Watergate Bay for bass ray trubot and plaicer along with Mawgan Port 7 Constantine. Don't forget all the p[opular beaches are crwioded in the summer months with holiday makers.
Sea fishing The North Coast has an abundance of charter boats available, particularly in Newquay, Port Isaac and Padstow.
RIVER GAME AND STILLWATER TROUT FISHING
Brown trout, grayling and the occasional dace can be taken by fly on the Upper Tanner between Kingford Mill and Bridgerule. Day tickets from Bude Sports and Bude Angling Supplies, Queen Street, Bude.
Lower Tamar Lake offers budget fishing for rainbow and brown trout. A South West Water reservior, day permirs are available from the self-service unit in the Lower Tamar car park. Season is 15 March to 12 October from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. The Tamar Lakes Water Park has good car parking, picnic area, Peninsula, Gift Shop and tea room, childrens play area and choice walks.
Salmon, sea trout and brown trout on the Rivers Tamar, Ottery, Inny and Carey. Permits from The Fishing Department, Homeleigh Garden Centre, Dutsion, Launceston. Crowdy Reservoir is good for budget fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Bodmin is the centre for salmon, sea trout and brown trout on the River Camel. The River Fowey, 2 miles from Lanhydrock, for salmon and sea trout from 1 April to 30 Sept. Salmon, sea trout and brown trout from thw East and West Looe Rivers (also Rivers Fowey, Lynher, Inny, Seaton and Camerl) from 1 April to 15 Dec. Salmon, sea trout and brown trout on the River Fowey from 1 April to 15 December. Salmon, sea trout and brown trout on the River Inny near Launceston from 1 March to 14 October. Early and late are the best times in the season for salmon with sea trout in the middle months.
Bodmin is the best place for salmon sea tyrou and brown trout fishing all on the River Camel.
White Acres Coarse Fishery, White Cross, Newquay (01726 860220). There are 15 lakes covering more than 36 acres offering the best variety of coarse fishing in the country. The lakes are fed by natural springs and provide a superb fishing habitat, surrounded by spectacular parkland and woods. Upper Tamar Lake Kilkhampton offers 81 acres stocked with rudd, carp, tench, bream and dace. Open all the year, day and night tickets are available. Bude Canal has roach, rudd, dace perch, tench, carp and bream. Close season 1st April to 31st May. Dutson Water 1.5 miles north of Launceston on the A388 for mirror, common (many doubels) crucian, tench, bream, golden orfe, rudd etc. No ground bait. Parking and toilets adjacent to lake. Tredidon Barton Lake 5 miles west of Launceston on A395 for two well stocked lakes with carp, tench, raoch, bream and ghost carp. Bolingey Lake near Perranport. 4 acres of coarse fishing carp, tench, roach, perch, and eels from 1 hour before sunset to 1 hour after. No close season. Trevella Park Crantock Two on-site coarse fishing lakes of 1 and 3 acres and another 1.5 acre lake nearby.Port Reservoir near Newquay 40 acres stocked with bream, rudd, tench and carp. Season open all year (24 hours) self service permit in car park. Mawgan Porth Pools Lake set in a small seaside village to the north of Newquay. Lakes have wooden platforms with paths which lead to and from the car parking area. Day tickets available open 7.30 am until dusk, they hire equipment.
The North coast has an abundance fo charter boats available. Newquay harbour is especially good to catch cod pollack gurnard shark & makerel, sharks are specialist boats. All tackle if supp;lied on the boat.
HISTORY OF FISHING IN NEWQUAY
Newquay has a great traditiona of fishing from the hrabour and pilchard fishing was the main stay. It was seasonal and involved everyone in the community. The history of the town goes back a very long way and pilchard fishing was noted in Elizabeth 1st time and the third biggest industry of all time.
Pilchards was a mian stay of the fishing industry and boat loads where landed in Newquay. Sadly not today.
